Brief History of the Department

            The Department of History, Bijni College came into being along with the establishment of the college in 1969. Initially there was only pre-university class. Later on BA Part-I and Part-II classes in History was introduced as an elective subject and the permission for the same was obtained from Gauhati University in 1973-74 and 1974-75.
            The BA- History, Major course in the department was introduced from the session 1992-92 and the concurrence for the same was granted by the Gauhati University on 14-02-2000.
            Mr. Lakheswar Brahma as the founder lecturer joined on 21-07-1969 in the department of History and following Mr. Pratap Chandra Das joined the Department on 13-02-1974. The department had been running with only two teaching faculties till the sudden demise of Mr. Lakheswar on 02-09-1983. On his demise the department had been continued with only single faculty for few months till the joining of Mr. D.K. Sharma on 24-11-1983 on the vacant post of Mr. L. Brahma. Mr. D.K. Sharma served as Lecturer in the department near about two years and resigned on 08-10-1985. Miss Aruna Patgiri was appointed as the Lecturer and joined in the department on 16-11-1985 and she also served only for few months. Mr. S.U. Seikh joined the Department on 18-09-1986 and worked as Associate Professor till his retirement on 30-05-2020.  Miss B. Adhikari and Mr. M. Talukdar were appointed as the Lecturer in the Department against Non-Sanctioned post on 02-09-1994 and 23-10-1998 respectively. Later on, both of them were regularized (Babita…………) and on 28-05-2014 respectively. Dr. Umananda Basumatary joined as Assistant Professor in the department against the sanctioned post on 08-08-2022.   

Objectives :

  1. To impart quality education among the students and equipped them for the different level of competitive examinations.
  2. The main objectives of the Department is to impart knowledge on the society, culture, religion and polity of ancient, medieval and modern India as well as the world and to emphasize on the value education amongst the student.

Vision and Mission :

            The department has the long term vision to visualize and empowerment of students with knowledge and skills imbibed with strong values and virtue to take challenges in a changing global society.
            The department also aimed to expertise academic activities for the betterment of the students through the discussion and application of blended learning methods. For the up-liftmen of the research skills of the students the department pays attention for the field-study and project work activities.
