Department of Botany

Brief History of the Department

Before 1994, the vast area of Bijni had been suffering from lack of science education. Students from this area had to be migrating to the various places like Bongaigaon, Pathsala, Kokrajhar etc. to take science education. To bridge the gap of knowledge of science education, in the year of 1994, the botany department was established along with the other science department during the tenure of U.C. Das (Ex-principal, Bijni College). The first lecturer of this department was Dr. Sushmita Chakravarty. The department was started with her hard work. Later on, the department was nourished by some lecturer like Mritunjoy Brahma, Jabin Chandra Ray, Babita Sarma, Kanak Basumatary, Jyotirupa Sarma, Beauty Queen Goyary and Sangju Basumatary etc. The department got permission from government in the year of 1996. With the initiation of college authority and departmental teachers, the department acquired concurrence for degree part-II in 22/02/2001. In 2013, along with the science stream, the botany department also came under Government provincialisation Act.
In the year of 2015-2016, the department got permission to start the major course with intact capacity of fifteen seats. In this long journey from 1994 to 2023, lots of students passed out from this department and contributing to the society by meeting the shortage of science teachers in the locality and also working in various other areas. Recently in the results declared by Gauhati University in July 2018, out first major batch has passed out which is a memorable moment for our department.
